Courageous Conversations Course

Course Description

Developing others is your responsibility as a manager and leader.  You need a team that’s highly skilled and engaged so that you can contribute through the team, not do the work yourself. Your job is therefore to ensure you have the right capacity (enough resource to do the job) and capability (the right skills, knowledge and expertise to do the job) at the right time (the phasing and matching of supply and demand).

What happens when things go wrong? Sometimes it is necessary to have difficult conversations to resolve issues in performance, contribution, capacity and capability – and that’s why you need to have Courageous Conversations. Nip things in the bud. Address issues before they become problems and help everyone learn and grow.

What topics are covered?

Our courses are tailored to your needs by selecting from a list of tools, each of which is an individual topic and takes about an hour. Each tool generally covers one key management skill, behaviour or attribute, is accompanied by a toolcard (which builds up to create a personalised toolkit) and uses our Tell-Show-Do experiential learning methodology.

You can select from the list of tools below to create learning that is just right for your needs or get in touch with one of our trainers to help design and curate the right programme for your team.

Courageous Conversations

1. Courageous Conversations

This term, coined by Susan Scott (Fierce Conversations), is a simple methodology to help you build confidence in having Courageous Conversations by clearly stating the situation, explaining the facts and being clear about the impact this has on you and others. Then you can work out a way to resolve the situation and move forward.

Grow Model

2. Grow Model

The GROW model (Goal, Reality, Options, Way Forward) is your single most powerful tool as a manager - it helps your people think for themselves and become self-sufficient. It makes needing a Courageous Conversation less likely, will build a strong relationship with your team and help especially if you then need to have a tough conversation when performance or contribution may be going in the wrong direction.

Loop of Leverage

3. The Loop of Leverage

The Loop of Leverage happens all the time when you have an ‘ask, don’t tell’ Coaching Mindset. This enables people to think for themselves and creates self-sufficiency, which gives you, as the manager, the time and energy to contribute at a higher level. The opposite is the ‘Loop of Doom’ where always providing solutions (telling) creates dependency, is exhausting for managers and erodes value.

Winners Triangle

4. Winners Triangle

Sometimes a drama triangle is occurring causing a dysfunctional set of relationships and the need for a Courageous Conversation. Escape the drama by using The Winners’ Triangle. This tool uses ‘Shrek’ to help you find easy ways to switch the persecutor into being proactive, the victim to be voicing and rescuer to being responsible.

How long is the course?

It depends on how many units you selected from the list above! Each unit takes about an hour, with extra time for an introduction, any breaks that are needed and a wrap-up. Choose one unit or add them together - three units make up half a day, and five or six units make a full day.

What can you expect?

Interactive, thought-provoking training that can be virtual, face-to-face or a hybrid of the two. We use a variety of methods to create learning that sticks: from videos to activities and exercises in groups or individually, to e-learning, to further reading.
