Managing conflict COURSE

Course Description

When any group of humans interact, there is potential for conflict. Add into this the need to deliver specific business objectives and projects, personal working styles, and individual views, and that potential can increase tenfold.

Disagreements are normal, but they don’t have to escalate to conflict, and if they do, not all conflict is bad. What is important is being able to give space for different opinions, seeking value rather than flaws in each view, and spotting the signs of when the situation is about to escalate.

If you can understand what is behind the conflict, you have a chance to not only avert or calm the situation but make the most of all of the experience and diversity individuals bring to the debate in your team.

Managing Conflict is one of those things that people shy away from, but this course equips you with knowledge about the common causes of workplace conflict, and different reactions you may see, and helps you become better at working with the emotions around disagreement in the workplace.

What topics are covered?

Our courses are tailored to your needs by selecting from a list of tools, each of which is an individual topic and takes about an hour. Each tool generally covers one key management skill, behaviour or attribute, is accompanied by a toolcard (which builds up to create a personalised toolkit) and uses our Tell-Show-Do experiential learning methodology.

You can select from the list of tools below to create learning that is just right for your needs or get in touch with one of our trainers to help design and curate the right programme for your team.

Choose from:

1. The Conflict-Stress Relationship

Conflict often arises when individuals feel stressed or attacked, whether this is real or perceived. Learn about stress responses, how they manifest as behaviors in the workplace, and their potential impacts. By spotting these early you can take action before a situation escalates.

3. Making The Most Of Difference

'If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got' is a saying attributed to Henry Ford, and in the workplace, if we always have the same view, agreeing on everything, we’re unlikely to move forward or find new solutions. Learn how to appreciate different views and even set up conflict situations to spark creativity and productivity in the workplace.

2. Sources Of Workplace Conflict

When workplace conflict arises, it can feel personal but the source of that conflict can often be traced back to one of three key sources. Understanding the source of conflict helps you move from subjective to objective, supporting you to unpick the conflict and find resolution.

4. Conflict Management

When conflict does arise and needs to be solved, this tool gives you a simple model to support resolution and the actions that increase the likelihood of reaching a resolution for all parties.

How long is the course?

It depends on how many units you selected from the list above! Each unit takes about an hour, with extra time for an introduction, any breaks that are needed, and a wrap-up. Choose one unit or add them together - three units make up half a day, and five or six units make a full day.

What can you expect?

Interactive, thought-provoking training that can be virtual, face-to-face or a hybrid of the two. We use a variety of methods to create learning that sticks: from videos to activities and exercises in groups or individually, to e-learning, to further reading.
